This contribution is focused on the importance and potential of the development of mass transport in tourism destinations. The aim of the paper is to assess the importance of public transport and other transport services, as well as how this importance differs in selected countries and in different types of destinations, and what influence public transport has on the development of a given area of tourism.
Factorial repeated measures ANOVA was primarily used to test established research hypotheses. Furthermore, a Tukey HSD post-hoc test for an unequal number of n was performed. Data were obtained through primary research using a questionnaire survey among tourism experts. Six selected countries were compared – the Czech Republic, Germany, Austria, Italy, the Netherlands and Mexico. For statistical processing, questions regarding the potential of tourism in the given region, the contribution of individual types of transport to local development, the view of individual transport service providers on the environment and the assessment of the perception of the level of support for transport development in individual states were selected from the questionnaire survey.
According to the achieved results, it can be said that the contribution of individual types of transport to local development differs significantly. Regardless of the country, public transport is considered the most important development element. Furthermore, it was found that public transport is generally considered to be the most environmentally friendly. It can also be stated that tourism experts expect further development of transport in their destination, but they are not completely satisfied with the state of development preparations. The level of public transport is the worst rated in Mexico, but the experts there are most aware of its influence on the development of tourism and the benefit to the local population. In the Netherlands and Italy, the city or state motivates the use of public transport the most, while in Mexico and the Czech Republic, this support is perceived to be comparatively less. In the Netherlands, Italy and Mexico, they are open to the integration of shared means of transport (e.g., shared bikes, scooters or Uber) into the public transport system, on the contrary, the Czech Republic is more sceptical of these alternative means of transport. Further development of public transport is planned in all states, and local administration participates in its operation.
